sudo helpfully won't let you do anything as root anymore if you disturb its precious 440 permissions. Because, you know, having root be able to write the file would be INSECURE. FML.
Edit: Whee!! It even helpfully segfaults on karmic:
$ sudo bash
sudo: /etc/sudoers is mode 0640, should be 0440
Segmentation fault
